 Year 6,

This week you have worked well. In maths you were very resilient when working with algebra-forming expressions, substituting letters for numbers, and working with formulae. In English, you wrote very powerful descriptive paragraphs about the gluttony of animals in Paradise Sands and you created your own poems for Young Writers. In science, you used prisms to see the different colours of light, and then created your own colour wheels to experiment with. In art, you continued to create your expressive artwork about all the things you enjoy.

Next week, you will have the opportunity to work on some more SATs papers. Alongside this, you will also begin working on your own narratives inspired by Paradise Sands, and you will be learning about the Shang Dynasty in history. You will also have an opportunity to get creative in science where you will learn about shadows and then use this understanding to undertake some storytelling. You will also have time to finish your artworks from art and RE.

Half term project – Masters of Maths

This half term, your project is to create a game for your classmates to play which covers areas of maths that we have learnt about in class. This game could be a quiz (paper based), or could be a board game (or a more creative idea if you have one).

You can focus on one topic or a range of maths which we have covered, such as: place value, addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, shape, fractions, area, perimeter, coordinates, ratio, proportion, or decimals and percentages as you covered them in Year 5.  

Please ensure that you bring your game to school by Monday 9^th February as we will be playing them sometime that week.

 

You should be:

 -        Reading 5 times a week and completing a reading journal activity once a week

 -        Practising spellings each week between the pre-test and test; writing spellings at least 5 times and writing 10 of them into sentences (ensure that these are high quality and make sense) in your Home Learning Journal (set on Monday and completed for Friday)

 -        Completing the piece of English and piece of Maths set each week (set on Wednesday and completed for Monday)

 Year 6,

This week you have worked hard on your resilience in a range of learning. In maths you have worked with single and 2-step function machines, and begun forming expressions in algebra. In English, you have written formal letters to The Teller with a focus on revising relative clauses, and written descriptive paragraphs inspired by the banquet in Paradise Sands. In science, you investigated refraction and in art you considered your thoughts on a piece of artwork and then found ways of expressing yourselves through art using different materials. You also conducted your geography fieldwork and wrote a report advising on ways to improve the human impacts on the environment.

Next week, you will be forming equations and solving single and 2-step equations in maths. In English, you will be planning your own narratives inspired by Paradise Sands. In art you will continue to find different artistic ways of expressing yourselves, inspired by the techniques used by other artists. In science, you will investigate the colour spectrum and in RE you will consider the purpose and impact of art in religion.

 Year 6,

Phew! Where has that week gone? I don’t know about you but this week in particular has flown by. In maths you have been learning about scale drawing, scale factors and solving ratio and proportion problems. In English, you began reading ‘Paradise Sands’ and wrote your own descriptive paragraphs and openers. In science, you investigated how light travels in straight lines and how it can be reflected – creating periscopes to demonstrate this (photographs below). In Spanish, you began your new topic of shopping and in PSHE you considered how to achieve your own goals, and how the plight of others makes you feel, alongside what you can do to help.

This week you also received back your SATs papers from before Christmas (remember I kept a handful back). I did this so that you can go through them with your adults if they wish to. You can see what you are doing well, and what you may want to work on some more.

 

Next week, in English, we will continue to study Paradise Sands, also recapping relative clauses in the process. In maths, we will begin to understand algebra (it’s not as scary as it sounds!) In science, you will investigate refraction and  we will hopefully complete our geography unit by conducting the local fieldwork we discussed this week, and then creating reports on this using the Chromebooks.

SATs results - as we discussed in class, I have handed out most of the papers you sat before Christmas. I have kept some back as I need them for reference. If your adult wishes for them to be handed back, they can email me to let me know. Below are the pass marks for each set of papers - you will need to add the 3 maths papers together to get that score, and then add the spellings and grammar paper scores to get your SPaG score. As I explained, these are the pass marks for that year but they will change every year by a number of marks, so don't rely too heavily on those numbers. The returning of the papers is more for you to look through to see what to work on and what you are already doing well.

 Year 6,

Welcome back! This week you have inferred the start of a story from pictures and created expanded phrases in English, and have begun working on ratio in maths. In PSHE you have finished the Celebrating Differences topic, which ended with a conversation (which was introduced with your own discussions) around migration, illegal migration, refugees and the appearance of flags last year - you were incredibly sensible when discussing such a sensitive topic. You have looked at and labelled the regions of the UK in geography and set yourself goals for the year too.

Next week, in English, you will be writing an introduction to the story and begin reading the actual one. In maths, you will continue to learn about ratio and apply it to scale drawings. in science, you will begin our new topic of 'Light' (please try to bring in an empty cereal box for Wednesday), and in PSHE you will consider how to achieve the goals you set this week. Weather depending, there is a chance we may undertake some fieldwork for geography next week, but we will see nearer the time.
