29.11.24

 Year 6,

It has been yet another busy week. In English, you have written narrative poems inspired by your version of ‘The Promise’. In maths, you have calculated with fractions and found fractions of amounts. Science this week was a chance for you to investigate the impact of exercise on heart rate, and in RE you completed learning on the festival of Wesak. This week, 4 of you had the amazing opportunity to visit 10 Downing Street to ask questions of the Prime Minister for Newsround. What an amazing experience! I was very impressed to hear that you behaved impeccably and asked fantastic questions of him. I was also incredibly proud of the rest of you as you handled the situation with great maturity. The way you decided whether or not you wanted to participate, and the way those of you who did handled the disappointment of not being selected – you were amazing!

This week your home learning pages are:

-        Maths (dependant on book type) – 26 and either 34 or 35 – it should be the final ‘patterns and sequences’ page

-        Grammar – 36 and 37

Next week, you will be given the opportunity to write your narrative inspired by ‘The Promise’ as a narrative, rather than a poem. In maths, you will continue to find fractions of amount and then begin looking at converting measures. In science, you will consider the impact of diet and exercise on the human body, and in geography you will study birth and death rates and how they impact population.

Half term project - Amazing Authors!

This half term’s task requires you to become an amazing author. You are able to free-write on a topic of your choosing or using the picture that I have provided. Your writing can be typed or handwritten but must be your work. You can write fiction or non-fiction (e.g. a biography on your favourite footballer), 1st or 3rd person, past or present tense – depending on what you prefer. This is all about you writing in a style that you like!

I do however, have some expectations: minimum 500 words, maximum 3 pages, writing that has been edited in the same way that we do in class – spellings, varied sentences, vocabulary choice and I’ll say it again - it must be your own work!

Your project is due on Monday 16th December 2024 where you will have a chance to enjoy each other’s stories in small groups.

Reminders

Please see the link https://youtu.be/EimYlUz0vb4   for the Christmas songs so that you can practise (apologies for forgetting to add this on Friday!)

You have PE on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so make sure you have your kits in on these days.

  You should be:

 -        Reading 5 times a week and completing a reading journal activity once a week

 -        Practising spellings each week between the pre-test and test; writing spellings at least 5 times and writing them into sentences in your Home Learning Journal (set on Monday and completed for Friday)

 -        Completing the piece of English and piece of Maths set each week (set on Wednesday and completed for Monday)

 -        Practising maths on Sumdog

Have a lovely weekend.

22.11.24

 Year 6,

What a week! Sunshine, snow, and lot of learning in between. In English, you have planned a narrative in the style of ‘The Promise’, and annotated it with figurative language for your narrative poem. In maths, you have multiplied fractions, and in science you found out about the different parts of blood and different blood vessels. We also had a fascinating STEM talk all about working as an engineer with supercars – some of which were worth £1million! In geography, you considered global population changes and why this might be, and in computing you worked together using a collaborative workspace. We also finished reading Varjak Paw, and you shared the final few ‘All About Me’ projects – well done for all of these!

This week your home learning pages are:

-        Maths (dependant on book type) – 32-33 or 33-34 – it should include a number grid and a group of L shapes.

-        Grammar – 34 and 35

Next week, you will be dividing fractions and writing your narrative poems. In science, you will investigate the impact of exercise on the heart, and in RE you will learn about one of the Buddhist festivals. You will also have Friendship Groups on Monday and School Council on Friday.

15.11.24

 Year 6,

This week you have revised figurative language and applied this to ‘The Promise’ in English, and you have added and subtracted fractions after converting them. In science, you began your new topic of Animals including Humans, and learnt about the heart and the circulatory system. You used stethoscopes to listen to your hearts, and you considered the movement of blood around the body. In PSHE, we have recognised Anti-Bullying Week, with a BBC live lesson on Tuesday, and subsequent lessons on the topic this afternoon. We also discussed what your donations of money might go towards with Children in Need, and you completed maths problems relating to this. In RE, you learnt about the interior of Buddhist temples and the significance of some elements. You have also been working extremely hard on your handwriting in our timed sessions.

This week your home learning pages are:

-        Maths – 8 and 21

-        Grammar – 32 and 33

Next week, you will continue to work on calculating with fractions, and in English you will be using figurative language to write poetry based on the book. In science, you will be learning about blood, and you will have a STEM talk too. In computing, you will consider how you can use a network to collaborate on a piece of work – using the Chromebooks to do so.

8.11.24

 Year 6,

What a first week back! I saw a number of you on Saturday and thank you for your support with the fireworks event. Thinking about the usual week you have covered a lot. In English, you have begun working on The Promise (making promises of your own, considering verbs and nouns, and writing diary entries). In maths, you have been finding equivalent fractions and comparing and ordering them. In science, you formed field guides on the ground of Little Heath using classification. In RE, you looked for symbolism in the exterior of Buddhist temples.

Next week, you will continue to work on ‘The Promise’ in English and will be calculating with fractions in maths. In RE, you will look at symbolism in the interior of Buddhist temples. It is also Anti-Bullying Week next week so we will be working on that too.

This week your home learning pages are:

-        Maths – 7 and 25

-        Grammar – 6 and 7

Linking with PSHE and online safety, please share the below message with your parents as we are aware of lots of people enjoying online games.

I wanted to reach out regarding online gaming, as I know it’s a popular activity for many children in our class. Some of the games they’re enjoying, like Fortnite, are actually designed for older players (aged 13+). Others, like Roblox, are widely used by this age group but also include online interaction features.

While these games can be a great way for children to unwind and connect with friends, they do present a risk of young people talking to strangers, which can sometimes lead to language or content that isn’t ideal for their age. Playing these games frequently or for long stretches can also sometimes make it challenging for pupils to stay focused on schoolwork and other activities.

To help ensure a safe and balanced experience with online games, I recommend taking a look at the games your child plays and making sure they’re appropriate for their age. Most devices—whether phones, tablets, or gaming consoles—include options to manage safety settings, such as limiting chat features, setting time limits, and controlling in-game purchases.

As children grow older, they will naturally gain access to a wider range of platforms, each with its own set of challenges. Social media, streaming services, and more complex games often include online interactions, so staying vigilant as your child explores these new spaces is essential.

Thank you very much for your support in this area. If you have any questions or would like guidance on setting up these controls, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

Reminders

You have PE on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday so make sure you have your kits in on these days.

Next week, flu vaccines are happening for those registered. Adults can still register you. Remember that it is just a quick spray up the nose, no needles needed.

 -        Practising maths on Sumdog (there is a competition on NOW!)

Have a lovely, restful break and see you all when we return.
