25.4.25

Year 6,

It has been quite a first week back. You have completed lots of learning this week, including working on calculating the area of triangles and area and perimeter of rectangles. In maths you have also studied circles and nets of 3D shapes. In English, you began learning about our new book ‘The Boy in the Tower’ by Polly Ho-Yen. You considered what is normal for our local area, and things that could threaten them. You also considered what you would take with you if your ‘normal’ changed, and began making notes ready for writing a newspaper report. You have also enjoyed PE lessons, an hour of music and finished our class reader ‘Wolf Brother’.

Home learning pages:

Maths - Page 3, 29, 30 and 31

Grammar - Pages 38 and 39

Next week, you will be working with shapes and volume in maths, as well as recapping some key concepts through games. In English, you will plan and write a newspaper report relating to our new class book. You will also have the chance to visit Sky Studios in Elstree on Tuesday morning, and swimming lessons will begin on Monday.

Half Term project

This half term, you have a different task. I would like you to use the next couple of weeks to spend time readying yourself for SATs. That can be completing work online, playing SumDog more frequently, and working on comprehension tasks. I have printed a range for you if you don’t have them at home already. I am already setting more home learning pages as part of this project and practise for Secondary School.

After SATs, I would like you to spend the time developing one of your key interests. This could be art, football, writing, studying a scientist or specific person from history, or even developing your roller-skating! Be sure you focus on something you enjoy.

I will not expect you to produce anything specific or present this half term. It is all about you doing what you need for the next few weeks.

Reminders

You should be:

 -        Reading 5 times a week and completing a reading journal activity once a week
 -        Practising spellings each week between the pre-test and test; writing spellings at least 5 times and writing 10 of them into sentences (ensure that these are high quality and make sense) in your Home Learning Journal (set on Monday and completed for Friday)
 -        Completing the English and Maths set each week (set on Wednesday and completed for Monday)
 -        Practising maths on Sumdog

Have a lovely weekend.

4.4.25

Year 6,

I hope you have had an enjoyable term - I can't believe we are at the Easter holidays! You have been up to all sorts of things this term, a planetarium, KNEX challenge, science workshop, and making items out of clay, to name just a few. This week, you have worked well on percentages of amounts and area of rectilinear shapes in maths. In English, you have finished and edited your stories - well done! You have also had a chance to play your spelling games which were very informative and we will use them again before SATs as they were so good.

I have set you some home learning to keep you going. Maybe try to get it out of the way as soon as possible (if you haven't already), so that you can have a restful break.

Home learning pages:

Maths - Page 37 and 38
Reading (poetry)- Pages 24 to 31

After half term you will be incredibly busy and this will include the Sky visit as well as SATs. Be sure to rest this break and be ready for our return.
I hope you have a lovely time, whatever you are doing.
Mrs Cresswell ðŸ˜Š

28.3.25

Year 6,

What a week! In English you have been writing your own narratives inspired by Paradise Sands. You have also had the opportunity to complete some practice papers. In science, you undertook your electricity investigations and in PSHE you considered things that are resting on your minds and then thought about what you can or can't control, and how you can help yourself. In a separate session, you considered the impacts of different types of drugs. This week you have also had the exciting opportunity to hear from 2 Deputy Lieutenants who spoke about their roles, the king and his roles, and the Commonwealth (Photographs below). On Tuesday, you had a visit from the Fire Brigade who taught you about fire safety and their truck. Yesterday, we visited Christ Church to learn more about Christian values and the importance of Salvation. You completed activities around forgiveness, Easter, The Last Supper and Salvation itself (Photographs below). Today you designed your film proposals in preparation for our visit to Sky Studios Elstree in a few weeks time. Remember that only 3 of those will be taken forward for our trip but I will try to find time after SATs for you to all have a chance to create your own versions in school.

Home learning pages:

Maths - Page 9 and 10
Grammar - Pages 26 and 27

Next week is the final week of the Spring Term! You will be looking at percentages of amounts and problem solving in maths, and in English you will finish your narratives. In science, you will write up your results and at some point we will organise a vote on the film proposals. On Monday, you will also have the chance to watch the Year 3,4,5 production, and on Wednesday afternoon we have Open Afternoon for parents to see your books from 3pm. On Thursday, you projects are due and you will have a chance to play the games that afternoon.

Half term project - Super spellers!

This half term’s task requires you to become a super speller (and find a way to support others to become one too!) You are required to create a game which will support the class with their spellings. This could focus on the Year 3-4 and Year 5-6 spellings, or a few specific spelling rules. The game MUST come with answers and instructions on how to play.

Your project is due on Thursday 3rd April where you will have a chance to play each other's games in small groups or pairs.

I have sent you home with a booklet containing the spelling rules and year group spellings to support you in this and in any revision you choose to do.

Reminders

Open Afternoon from 3pm on Wednesday
Projects due on Thursday
School finishes at 1.15pm on Friday

You should be:
 -        Reading 5 times a week and completing a reading journal activity once a week
 -        Practising spellings each week between the pre-test and test; writing spellings at least 5 times and writing 10 of them into sentences (ensure that these are high quality and make sense) in your Home Learning Journal (set on Monday and completed for Friday)
 -        Completing the piece of English and piece of Maths set each week (set on Wednesday and completed for Monday)
 -        Practising maths on Sumdog

Have a lovely weekend.
